The year of Lil Yachty

Lil Yachty is no average hip-hop recording artist. His first major hit, “1 Night,” produced by his longtime friend, Burberry Perry, surpassed 10 million plays on SoundCloud. In February, everyone wanted to know more about the guy with the beaded red braids after his surprise modeling appearance at Kanye West’s Yeezy season 3 show at Madison Square Garden. So who is Lil Yachty? Born Miles Parks McCollum on August 23, 1997 in Atlanta, GA, Yachty is a viral sensation with a combined total of over 82 million YouTube views for his “1 Night” and “Minnesota” videos who opened for Rae Sremmurd in 2016 and sold out his first headlining tour in a matter of minutes.

Yachty describes his sound as “bubblegum trap” characterized by his high-pitched singing voice over samples of the sounds of his childhood such as the Rugrats theme, Super Nintendo and Charlie Brown. Adamant about not rapping about anything he doesn’t do i.e. drinking alcohol and taking drugs, Lil Yachty’s sole purpose is to preach positivity. ESQUIRE called his music the “The future of hip hop” and last year he was featured on some of the biggest songs to come out in the genre including Chance the Rapper’s “Mixtape” and D.R.A.M.’s summer hit “Broccoli” which earned a 2017 GRAMMY nomination.

With a boatload of music press accolades under his belt and brand partnerships from ADIDAS, Finish Line, Nautica, Puma, Pink Dolphin, and a cameo appearance in a series of national Sprite commercials with basketball legend Lebron James, Lil Yachty has set sail.
